Cost Comparison: Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood

Choosing new hardwood floors is an exciting step in updating your home, but let’s face it—budget plays a huge role in the decision-making process. If you’re wondering whether engineered or solid hardwood is the right choice for your home, you’re not alone! As your neighbors and local flooring experts here at Nolt’s Floor Covering, we’ve guided countless families in Lancaster and Lebanon counties through the process of choosing the perfect floor.

Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of how these two types of hardwood compare in cost—not just upfront, but also in the long run.

What’s the Difference Between Engineered and Solid Hardwood?

Before we dig into costs, let’s make sure we’re clear on what sets these two options apart.

Solid Hardwood

Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like: a single, solid piece of natural wood, typically about ¾ of an inch thick. It’s timeless, durable, and a favorite for homeowners looking for classic beauty and long-term investment.

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood, on the other hand, is a modern marvel. It features a thin layer of real hardwood on top of a core made of plywood or TruBalance     Real wood over an SPF Quarter sawn core layer. This layered construction makes it more stable in environments where moisture or temperature changes are a concern.

Here in central Pennsylvania, where we experience all 4 seasons with humid summers and dry winters, this difference can play a big role in your decision.

Upfront Costs: What Will You Pay Right Away?

Solid Hardwood Costs

Solid hardwood typically costs between $6 and $25 per square foot for materials, depending on the species of wood you choose. For example:

  • Oak, a classic choice, is on the more affordable side.
  • Exotic species like Brazilian cherry or tigerwood can climb into the higher price range.

Labor costs for installation add another $3 to $4 per square foot. Solid hardwood often requires nails or staples, and the subfloor may need prep work, adding to the overall cost.

Example: earlier this year we helped a family in Wernersville PA install solid Brazilian Cherry Hardwood in four (4) rooms and a hall of there home. The material cost was about $17 per square foot, and with installation, the total came to $24,143 for a 924-square-foot space.

Engineered Hardwood Costs

Engineered hardwood materials range from $6 to $18 per square foot, making it a bit easier on the wallet. Installation can also be more affordable—floating floor systems, for example, don’t require nails or glue, cutting down on labor costs.

Example: recently we helped a family in Denver PA install 5” engineered Hickory hardwood in their living room. The material cost was about $11 per square foot, and with installation, the total came to $4900 for a 290-square-foot space.

Long-Term Costs: What About the Future?

Durability and Lifespan

Solid hardwood wins hands-down for longevity. Since it can be sanded and refinished multiple times, it can last 50 years or more with proper care. This makes it a great long-term investment for homeowners planning to stay in their home for decades.

Engineered hardwood, while durable, can usually only be refinished once or twice, depending on the thickness of the top layer. If wear and tear are significant, replacement may be necessary sooner.

Maintenance Costs

Both types of hardwood require regular cleaning and occasional maintenance, but solid hardwood may need more attention over time. Recoating or refinishing every 10–15 years adds to the upkeep costs.

Engineered hardwood, with its factory-applied finish, is often easier to maintain and less prone to surface damage. However, deep scratches or damage might mean replacing boards rather than refinishing.

Hidden Costs You Might Not Consider

When budgeting for your floors, don’t forget the less obvious costs:

Subfloor Preparation

Solid hardwood usually requires a sturdy, even subfloor. If your home has uneven areas or requires additional support, this can add hundreds (or even thousands) to your project.

Moisture Barriers

In damp areas like basements or kitchens, both types of hardwood may need a moisture barrier. Engineered hardwood’s resistance to warping makes it a better choice for these spaces.

Underlayment

Hardwood floors should never be installed directly on another wood sup-floor.   You have a choice of using a product like Aquabar® or like many of our customers who upgrade to Whisper Step®.

Which One Fits Your Budget and Lifestyle?

Go with Solid Hardwood If…

  • You’re looking for a timeless, long-term investment.
  • You want the ability to refinish and restore your floors multiple times.
  • Your floors will be installed above grade in areas less prone to moisture.

Choose Engineered Hardwood If…

  • You’re looking for a budget-friendly option with a similar look to solid hardwood.
  • You’re planning to install in basements, kitchens, or other moisture-prone areas.
